Barnard is a city in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 221.

History

Barnard was platted in 1870. The city was named for J. F. Barnard, a railroad official. A post office called Barnard has been in operation since 1871.

Geography

Barnard is located at 40°10′29″N 94°49′22″W / 40.17472°N 94.82278°W / 40.17472; -94.82278 (40.174742, -94.822839), on the east bank of the One Hundred and Two River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 221 people, 93 households, and 59 families living in the city. The population density was 1,473.3 inhabitants per square mile (568.8/km2). There were 107 housing units at an average density of 713.3 per square mile (275.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.5% White and 0.5% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 93 households, of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.08.

The median age in the city was 39.9 years. 24.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.9% were from 25 to 44; 23% were from 45 to 64; and 20.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.6% male and 48.4% female.

Recreation

Barnard has only one city park, known as the Barnard Park, located on the east edge of town on State Highway M. The park contains a track, shelter, playground, and a horseshoe course. There is an annual celebration known as The Barnard Picnic, which usually takes place in July or August at the fairgrounds on the East side of the town. Many citizens also hunt.

Education

Barnard is the home to the newly consolidated South Nodaway R-IV School District. Originally, the Pre-K through 6th Grade elementary school had been located in nearby Guilford, five miles east of the town. In 2013, due to the rising costs of maintaining the old elementary school, the district was consolidated into one building in Barnard by expanding the existing high school.
