Bayport is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York, United States, on Long Island. The population was 8,609 at the 2020 census.

Bayport is in the southeast part of the Town of Islip.

Geography

The community borders the Great South Bay, Sayville and the hamlet of Blue Point.

Bayport is located at 40°44′52″N 73°3′15″W / 40.74778°N 73.05417°W / 40.74778; -73.05417 (40.747858, -73.054216).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2), of which 3.7 square miles (9.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.37%) is water.

Demographics for the CDP

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,662 people, 3,222 households, and 2,303 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,332.8 per square mile (901.5/km2). There were 3,325 housing units at an average density of 895.5/sq mi (346.0/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.06% White, 0.89% African American, 0.07% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.82% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.93% of the population.

There were 3,222 households, out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $74,861, and the median income for a family was $88,701. Males had a median income of $61,421 versus $40,247 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $31,638. About 2.6% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.4% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.

Bayport is said to be the town in which the Hardy Family and friends live, in the fictional series, The Hardy Boys. Also the phone number called in American Werewolf In London from the pay phone was a Bayport number.

Aerodrome

Bayport is home to one of only a few remaining aerodromes in Long Island. The Bayport Aerodrome Society is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1972. Its membership is composed of aviation professionals and those interested in preserving aviation history. By offering tours of the Aerodrome and living museum, its members share their passion for aviation with the community.


Education

Bayport is served by the Bayport-Blue Point School District, which consists of a high school (Bayport-Blue Point High School), a middle school (James Wilson Young Middle School), and three elementary schools, Academy Street Elementary, Sylvan Avenue Elementary, and Blue Point Elementary.
