Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is a former commune. It is found in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the Ain department in the east of France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune of Valserhône. In 2010, 11,790 people lived in the commune. The inhabitants are the Bellegardiens. The local economy is mostly based around commerce. Monuments in the commune are numerous. There are many castles including the Châteaux de Musinens, Mussel, Arlod, Vanchy and Crêts. There are also many churches including the Saint-Vicent-de-Paul, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, Saint-Nicolas d'Arlod and Saint-Claude de Vanchy churches. Famous people from Bellegarde-sur-Valserine include Robert Barrier, a politician, David Venditti, a French rugby player, Younès Kaboul, a French football player, Nelly Moenne Loccoz, a French snowboarder and Yves Amoureux, an author and movie producer.
