Burwell is a city in Garfield County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,210 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Garfield County.

History

Burwell was platted in 1883. In 1887, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to Burwell.

Burwell is host to "Nebraska's Big Rodeo", an annual event usually held the last weekend of July. This has been an important event for the town's economy and has been a staple for over 80 years. Burwell was one of the initial FFA chapter's of the state of Nebraska, the chapter was chartered March 1929.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,210 people, 574 households, and 312 families living in the city. The population density was 1,163.5 inhabitants per square mile (449.2/km2). There were 667 housing units at an average density of 641.3 per square mile (247.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.4% White, 0.2% African American, 0.1% from other races, and 0.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.

There were 574 households, of which 21.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 4.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.6% were non-families. 43.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 26.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.06 and the average family size was 2.87.

The median age in the city was 49.8 years. 21.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16.8% were from 25 to 44; 27.3% were from 45 to 64; and 29.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.8% male and 53.2% female.
