Carnuel is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,232 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the community derives from the Tiwa word for "badger place" and has been spelled both Canuel and Carnué.

Geography

Carnuel is located at 35°4′2″N 106°26′56″W / 35.06722°N 106.44889°W / 35.06722; -106.44889 (35.067181, -106.448823).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.42 square miles (14.05 km2), of which 0.031 square miles (0.08 km2), or 0.56%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 872 people, 371 households, and 244 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 354.0 people per square mile (136.9/km2). There were 398 housing units at an average density of 161.6 per square mile (62.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 69.27% White, 0.34% African American, 1.72% Native American, 27.06% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 51.15% of the population.

There were 371 households, out of which 25.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 111.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $38,281 versus $21,532 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,553. About 9.2% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.6% of those under age 18 and 12.6% of those age 65 or over.

Education

It is zoned to Albuquerque Public Schools.
