Cydia is a software application developed by Jay "Saurik" Freeman for the iPhone OS that serves as a graphical user interface for APT. Repositories that are included with Cydia allow for installation of software packages in which most are available to download at no cost. The software packages are downloaded directly to an iPhone or iPod Touch device, and are located in the /Applications directory, in the same location where "Apple native" applications are located.
Cydia is installed via jailbreaking; it is included in Pwnage Tool exclusively for Mac users and redsn0w for Mac and Windows users or QuickPwn for Mac and Windows users running Pre OS 3.0 devices.
Applications
Cydia applications can often function on a deeper level than Apple approved applications, because they have the ability to access any part of the hardware or filesystem that they need. This allows for themes, file browsers, and large-scale tweaks.
Cydia allows users to add custom sources, so people can choose where to download software from. There are numerous sources available 'officially', in community source packs, and private sources can be added manually.
Cydia Store
As of 1.0.2790-44 release of Cydia, Freeman introduced a new way of selling applications via Cydia. The Cydia Store is based on Google and Facebook accounts, and it will not let you download certain applications unless you pay for them, though the majority of applications on Cydia remain free.
Unlike AppStore applications, Cydia applications are not DRM protected and it is the author's responsibility to make sure that the application doesn't get pirated. You pay through PayPal, and and the proof of payment is linked to your Google or Facebook account, in case you get a new iPod or iPhone. It was introduced to provide a place for developers to sell their apps, in the event that they are rejected from the App Store
