Dolliver had its start in the year 1899 by the building of the Chicago and North Western Railway through that territory. It is named for United States Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver. The railroad line on which the town was established was shut down in the early 1970s.

As of the census of 2010, there were 66 people, 34 households, and 18 families residing in the city. The population density was 183.3 inhabitants per square mile (70.8/km2). There were 42 housing units at an average density of 116.7 per square mile (45.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.
