Engen (延元) was a Japanese era name (年号, nengō, lit. year name) of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō period after Kemmu and before Kōkoku. This period started in February 1336 and ended in April 1340. The monarchs during this time were Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇, Go-Daigo-tennō) and Emperor Go-Murakami (後村上天皇, Go-Murakami-tennō). The Northern Court pretender in Kyoto was Emperor Kōmyō (光明天皇, Kōmyō-tennō).

Events of the Engen era

  • 17 May 1336 (Engen 1, 6th day of the 4th month): Former-Emperor Go-Fushimi died.
  • 19 September 1339 (Engen 4, 16th day of the 8th month): Emperor Go-Daigo died.
  • 1340 (Engen 5): Sightings of a "broom star" (comet) are recorded.
