Fort Hamer is an unincorporated area in Manatee County, Florida, United States, and was the name of a short-lived U.S. Army fort in eastern Manatee County. Although the area is named for Fort Hamer, the former military installation has never been precisely located through historical or archaeological research.
Overview
There is also a Fort Hamer Park. A site for the bridge was opposed in 2003 by tribal groups. The area is also being developed with training facilities for rowers.
The U.S. Army's Fort Hamer was constructed on the south bank of the Manatee River near Gates Creek and included approximately six log buildings including housing for 165 men, a mess hall, hay barn and hospital. It was abandoned within a year after it was built.
