Genchū (元中) was a Japanese era name (年号, nengō, lit. year name) of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō period after Kōwa. This was the last Southern Court era. This period started in April 1384 and ended in October 1392. During this time, the monarch in Yoshino until 1392 was Emperor Go-Kameyama (後亀山天皇, Go-Kameyama-tennō).. Until 1392, the pretender in Kyoto was Emperor Go-Komatsu (後小松天皇, Go-Komatsu-tennō) After 1392, Go-Komatsu was the 100th emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.

Events of the Genchū Era

  • 1391 (Genchū 8): Yamana Ujikyo attacked Kyoto.
  • 1392 (Genchū 9), also known as Meitoku 3: Northern and Southern courts were reunited under Go-Komatsu.
