Description: The death and attainment of final Nirvana of Ānanda, the attendant of the Buddha and one of the patriarchs of the Buddhist teaching. Originally from Sikri, India. Sculpted in Greco-Buddhist style, the bas-relief depicts the death of Ānanda which took place in meditation posture [pictured at the right]. At the left, we can see half of the skeleton of Ānanda, which King Ajātasattu (Sanskrit:Ajātaśatrū) is worshiping. The other half of the skeleton was given to the Licchavi clan, but this is probably depicted in the right part of the relief, which has not survived.
