Description: 1839-C $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Variety 1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Lightly cleaned with numerous light abrasions but no overt hairlines or evidence of harsh cleaning, this Charlotte Mint example is a necessity for type and gold specialists because of its one-year-only design status and the popular obverse mintmark. A year later, the portrait was subtly modified and the mintmark moved to the reverse, where it resides for the rest of the series. Despite the cleaning, mint luster remains around the devices and the in-hand impression conveys nice eye appeal. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $30.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $4406.25. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
