Description: Garces Memorial Circle — with a statue honoring explorer Francisco Garcés, located in Bakersfield, California. He was a Spanish explorer, active in Colonial California and Southwestern North America for the colonial Viceroyalty of New Spain. Francisco Garcés discovered the first route to the southern San Joaquin Valley (site of Bakersfield) through the Old Tejon Pass, over the Tehachapi Mountains, from the Mojave Desert and Spanish colonial Mexico.
