It was built in 1872 and was designed by Henry Fernbach in the Moorish Revival style as a copy of Budapest's Dohány Street Synagogue. It has been in continuous use by a congregation longer than any other synagogue in the city. The building was designated a New York City landmark on June 7, 1966, and was added to the NRHP on October 19, 1970, then designated a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975.
