Description: The Central Synagogue (Congregation Ahavath Chesed) is located at 652 Lexington Avenue on the corner of East 55th Street, Manhattan, New York City, New York. It was built in 1872 and was designed by Henry Fernbach in the Moorish Revival style as a copy of Budapest's Dohány Street Synagogue. It has been in continuous use by a congregation longer than any other synagogue in the city. The building was designated a New York City landmark on June 7, 1966, and was added to the NRHP on October 19, 1970, then designated a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975.
