A cross was first erected on the site in 1913; the present one - the third on the site -- dates from 1954 and was designed by Donald Campbell; it is built of prestressed concrete and is 29 feet (8.8 m) tall (43 feet tall including the base) with a 12-foot (3.7 m) arm spread. The cross is the centerpiece of the memorial, which is privately owned but recognized by the Department of Defense.
