Description: 08-PU-Folder 3a: Roosevelt’s Shangri-La in Maryland Mountains, Thurmont, Maryland. Seventy miles away from the nation’s capital hidden in the Catoctin Mountains was President Roosevelt’s “Shangri-La.” It was his weekend retreat = kept secret until after the war. It was build during the Depression 30’s and was originally one of the three unpretentious public resorts in the National Park. Less than a mile away is Catoctin Furnace where Revolutionary troops forged cannon balls for the Battle of Yorktown. Photo shows: The main living room of the lodge, with America and Presidential flags over the fire place, and the Presidential Seal over the door. The chair near the bookcase was that of the President. Rocker on the left belonged to Theodore Roosevelt when he was in the White House. All furniture was taken from the attic of the White House. Office of War Information Collection. (2016/08/30).
