Description: Æthelflæd Monument, Tamworth. At the base of the castle mound stands a monument to Æthelflæd, daughter of King Alfred the Great, who married Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians. Known as the 'Lady of the Mercians', she governed the Mercia from her husband's death in 911 until her own death in 918 AD, and led attacks on the invading Danes. She is depicted with her nephew Æthelstan, who she brought up and who later became the first King of England. See 1740817 for the inscription. The monument was designed by H. C. Mitchell and sculpted by E. G. Bramwell. It was erected in 1913 to commemorate the millennium of the fortification of Tamworth by Ætehlflæd. See http://www.pmsa.org.uk/pmsa-database/5840/.
