Description: The Flying Ambulances were developed by French battlefield surgeon Dominque-Jean Larrey to rapidly transport the wounded from the battlefield to field hospitals located two miles to the rear of the main battlelines. Prior to their creation, the wounded would not be collected until the end of the battle or they would have to limp back to the base camp and where they would be attended to according to their social rank (aristocratic officers were treated first, with common soldiers treated last) rather than the seriousness of their wounds leaving the most critically injured to die on the field.
