Description: Andrew Downes Memorial, St Peter's Church This memorial to the Regius Professor of Greek, one of the translators of the King James Bible, was restored and repainted in 1968. The Latin inscription reads: ANDREAS DOWNES SALOP COL D IOHAN APVD CANTABOLE[M] SOCI[VS]. GRÆCÆ LINGVÆ REGIVS PROFFESSOR: QVAM PROVINCIAM SVMA[M] CVM FIDELITATE ET EGREGIA LAVDE PER VNDE QVADRAGINTA ANNOS EXORNAVIT: VIR MORVM CANDORE SPECTABILIS. IN REBVS DIVINIS PROBE EXERCITVS TOTIVS A HVMANIORIS LITERATVRÆ. AD STVPOREM VSQ[VE] CALLENTISSIM[VS]. IAM SEPTVAGENERI[VS]: ET QVOD EXCVRRIT RVDE DONATVR AB ACADEMIA, RESERVATO TAMEN EI CONSVETO HONORARIO. AN[N]O ÆTATIS 77º SECESSIT HVC IN AGRVM SVBVRBANVM.
