Owen (acting Brigadier General) Nov. 3rd 63." Verso: "This sketch represents the attack in overwhelming numbers on the 60th Indiana Regt. And was the first attack.- // Battle of Grand Coteau fought Nov. 3rd (Tuesday) 1863 Gen. Bainbridge Commdg Union forces- Gen. Greene Commdg Confederates // Union forces 1st Brigade 4 [sic] Div 13th Army corps under Brig. Gen. Burbridge commdg 4th div) was attacked by the 'rebels['] under Gen. Greene, whose forces were estimated 6000 strong. Gen. Burbridge having only 1 Brigade of 12090 men and after one the most sanguinary conflicts of the war (considering the numbers engaged) forced back, across the bayou, losing about half his forces including all losses: (18 killed, 100 wounded, missing 28 officers, 531 men and 1 piece artillery belonging to the 17th Ohio Battery, when he was reinforced by Gen. Maginess' Div (Gen. Cameron Comdg) when the enemy retired, leaving behind some of their killed and wounded. Gen. Burbridge was everywhere in the thickest of the fight. At one time dismounted and personally fired one of the pieces of 17th Ohio Battery with terrible effect, thus onto every part of the field personally rallying the men and leading them on. // Lt.
