Description: Monumental brass in Hever Church in Kent to Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, 1st Earl of Ormond (c. 1477 – 1539), KG, of Hever Castle, father of Queen Anne Boleyn. Dressed in full robes and insignia of a Knight of the Garter. A falcon on his right shoulder (crest of the Bullen family) and a griffin at his feet. As it was customary for effigies to face the east (Jerusalem, standard orientation of Christian churches) feet forward, the inscription appears upside-down, as it is intended to be read by persons standing behind it (standing to west looking eastward) not standing in the chancel (holiest location, considered out-of-bounds to all but the priest), looking west with back to the altar.
