Description: An oil painting showing the west front of Chatsworth House in the 18th century, painted by William Marlow (1740–1813). The stable block is to the left of the house and the cascade to the right. The north wing had not been built. This picture emphasises the romantic aspect of Chatsworth's setting on the edge of the Peak District. The hills behind house were windswept moorland when it was built. They were not forested until the 18th century, and are still partially exposed in this view.
