Description: Chief Wabasha III (c. 1816–1876) was principal chief of the Mdewakanton Dakota tribe, later known as the Santee Sioux. In the final weeks of the Dakota War of 1862, he sent covert communications to Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley stating his opposition to the war.
