Description: Coat of arms first borne by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, 1st Marquess of Queensberry (1637-1695), by royal warrant. (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.294). He was descended from Sir Wiliam Douglas, natural son of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar. Blazon: Or, a bordure double tressure flory counter-flory gules, an inescutcheon quarterly of 4: 1 & 4: Argent a man's heart Gules imperially crowned Or on a chief Azure three mullets of the field (DOUGLAS, with crown added to heart, c.1542); 2 & 3: Azure a bend between six cross crosslets fitchée Or (MAR).
