Description: "Large en:Oakum-Room (Under The Silent System) At The Middlesex House Of Correction, Coldbath Fields" on p301 of The criminal prisons of London, and scenes of prison life (1864) by en:Henry Mayhew (d. 1887) & John Binny. Prisoners were required to pick apart old ropes to make oakum, which was used to seal ships and piping. Typically they might have to do 2 pounds a day, although that might be increased to 6 pounds if sentenced to hard labour.
