Description: Picture of Renée Green's art installation Color I (1990) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 2022. A grey platform mounted on a wall, covered in a six-column, five-row grid of small rectangular color swatches, each with a small label below it showing the commercial name for that paint color, most of which are exoticized terms about or for non-Western people or people of color. On each side of the grid is a white piece of paper mounted on another grey platform. Each paper contains a full page of text; the left page contains an excerpt of Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted (1892) by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper; the right page contains an excerpt of The Great Gatsby (1925) by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Both excerpts contain exchanges by characters in the novels discussing or espousing racist pseudo-scientific ideas, including eugenics. The papers are warped on top of the secondary mounting platforms.
