Description: Detail from "Augustus Earle (presumed) - Quarter Deck of a Man of War on Diskivery (sic) or interesting Scenes on an Interesting Voyage". Charles Darwin on the Beagle voyage, at Bahía Blanca around 24 September 1832. He tells a crewman "Observe its legs are long, and the palpi are strongly toothed on the inner side. I think the whole insect appears of a dark chestnut brown colour with a yellowish cast on the abdomen. Its history is but little known but there can be no doubt of its being of a predacious nature. What do you think Mr –?". Presumed painted by the shipboard artist Augustus Earle. Offered for sale by Sotheby's London 15 December 2015, and described by them as "one of the earliest depictions of Darwin, the only image of him on the Beagle, and an exceptionally rare image of him at work as a naturalist".
