Description: Edward Parsons Tobie, Jr., shown here c. 1900, won the U.S. Medal of Honor for his display of gallantry during the American Civil War. A native of Lewiston, Maine, he served as a sergeant-major with the 1st Maine Cavalry. Despite being severely wounded during the Battle of Sailor's Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865 and at Farmville April 7, he refused hospitalization, choosing instead to remain with his regiment in order to perform the full duties of adjutant upon the wounding of his regiment's prior adjutant. As a result, Tobie was present for duty at Appomattox.
