Description: Elswitha Hall. The handsome grade II* listed, Georgian Elswitha Hall was built c1759 and is named after Elswitha, a Princess of the Gaina tribe who married King Alfred the Great in 868. It is the birthplace of Sir Halford Mackinder, English Geographer, politician and pioneer of adult education. During his illustrious career, he was Reader in Geography at Oxford University, one of the founders of the London School of Economics in 1895, helped found the University of Reading in 1892 and the Geographical Association in 1893 (later Chairman and President). Director of the London School of Economics 1903-08 and MP for Glasgow Calmachie 1910-22. http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/LSEHistory/mackinder.htm http://www.valpo.edu/geomet/histphil/test/mackinde.html The plaque reads "Sir Halford John Mackinder P.C. geographer, author, administrator, explorer, politician, public servant. Born in this house 15th February 1861" Mackinder's father was a doctor and it has been a surgery ever since, extended in 1990 with the addition of the Mackinder wing, seen just to the right.
