Description: Entrance to Maen Castle. Maen Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort (or "cliff castle"), built before 300BC. The small rocky headland was defended by a stone wall, ditch and counterscarp bank. This photo shows the narrow gateway to the fort, looking back out towards the mainland - a small National Trust sign nearby points out the castle entrance for the unaware. The gateway is well-preserved and made of massive blocks of granite: an abundant local building material. On the far side of the entrance is one of the former gate jambs, lying partly in the gateway passage. There are remains of a contemporary field system on the slope overlooking the site.
