Description: A Vought F8U-1 Crusader at Naval Air Station China Lake, California (USA), about to take off for the record Thompson Trophy flight in 1956. Piloted by Cdr. Windsor the Crusader reached a speed of 1640 km/h (1,019 mph). The Thompson Trophy race was one of the U.S. National Air Races of the heyday of early airplane racing in the 1930's. Established in 1929, the last race was held in 1961. The race was 10 miles (16.09 km) long with 50-ft (15-m) high pylons marking the turns, and emphasized low altitude flying and manoeuvrability at high speeds.
