Description: A cartoon of forceful inhalation (left) and forceful exhalation (right). During inhalation the diaphragm (domed, almost horizontal muscle depicted in red) contracts and pushes the abdominal contents downwards and outwards. The accessory muscles of inhalation pull the sides of the rib cage upwards which increases the transverse diameter of the chest, thus adding to the increase in volume of the thoracic cavity. Air enters the lungs from the atmosphere. During exhalation (right) the large powerful muscles of the abdominal wall contract pulling the rib cage strongly downwards, while pushing the abdominal contents up against the relaxed diaphragm. This decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity and forces air out of the lungs to the exterior.
