Description: Gateposts of Syon Abbey in the parish of Rattery in Devon. The large Georgian country house beyond was built by the Palk family as "Marley House". In about 1800 Walter Palk, MP, purchased the manor of Rattery with several estates, from the Hering family. (Risdon, Tristram (d.1640), Survey of Devon, 1811 edition, London, 1811, with 1810 Additions, p.380). In 1935 it was renamed Syon Abbey, when it became the home of a community of Bridgettine nuns, which had lived on the Continent in exile following King Henry VIII's Dissolution of Wikipedia:Syon Monastery in Twickenham, Middlesex. See [1]. The building is in SX7261.
