Description: When not in use, the material was pulled back off two blades (a green line is just visible on the photograph) and shutter flaps were opened, so the wind would not cause the windmill blades to rotate. When there was a gentle breeze, the material was pulled over two blades and the shutter flaps were closed on the other two blades to harness the maximal energy of the breeze. In high winds the material was pulled off and flaps partially opened, to prevent damage to the mill. In this way the speed of the rotating grinding stones was kept constant.
