Description: A cenotaph erected to honor the "colored citizens of Oberlin" who died during or because of their participation in John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry: John Copeland, Shields Green, and Lewis Sheridan Leary. See w:John Brown's raiders. Note that the death date of December 2 given for Green and Copeland is wrong; it should be December 16. Shields Green's link to Oberlin is disputed; see w:Shields Green. Although located in a cemetery, none of the three bodies are buried there. The bodies of Green and Copeland were used for anatomical dissections at the Winchester Medical College, and the bones discarded. Leary's body was thrown in a packing box with other bodies of raiders killed, and dumped in a pit; in 1899 they were excavated (surreptitiously) and reburied next to the bodies of John Brown and w:Watson Brown, on his farm.
