Description: The Pelican, d'Iberville's ship stuck in the ice of Hudson Bay in August 1697. Vessel identifiable with the text of Bacqueville de La Potherie, embarked on the ship in 1697 and describes the meeting with the Eskimos on the ice floe as well as docking the ship on the ice with grapples. Drawing made to illustrate the fighting in Hudson Bay during the war of the League of Augsburg (1688-1697). Drawing published in 1722 and then in 1753. Translation of text on the image : The vessel held by grapples makes alliance with the Inuit on the ice (title). Letter A : sailors doing the laundry. Letter B : sailors recovering fresh water (on ice). Letter C : ceremonial pipe (peace pipe) presented to the Inuit. Letter D : « marine wolf » = seal. Letter E : sailors playing to warm themselves.
