Text Appearing Before Image: in coal for domestic purposes, handlingmore, perhaps, than is handled at any other two yards inthe county. Messrs. Roe & Co.s facilities for handlingcoal are very complete. The coal is elevated by steamsome thirty feet and dumped in iron cars, which holdone ton each. The cars pass over a tramway, on which islaid a T rail. This tramway is two hundred feet long,with turntables to enable the cars to run in any direction.The coal is then dumped in large bunkers, capable ofholding about 15,000 tons. From a comparatively smallbeginning Messrs. Roe & Co. have built up a large andlucrative business. Messrs. George B. Roe and Charles A. Willets areboth natives of the village and town of Flushing. Theirancestors for several generations have also resided there. The following notice of this concern is from the TradeReview: There is little doubt in our mind that one of the mostextensive, if not the largest coal, lumber, lime, brick andshingle yard on Long Island, outside the boundaries of Text Appearing After Image: BUSINESS INSTITUTIONS OF FLUSHING. 109 the city of Brooklyn, is that of George B. Roe & Co.,corner of Broadway and Lawrence street (ofifice No. 9Main street), Flushing. The operations of the firm areextensive and varied, and of course occupy a large spacein the industrial interests of the handsome suburban vil-lage that lies at the head of Flushing Bay. A reporterof this paper visited Flushing a few days ago, and amongother establishments he visited in quest of informationfor readers of the Trade Review was the yard and ofificeof the above firm. He was at once impressed with theextent and great value of its business, and on retiringfound his note-book well filled with items of trade interest,of which in this article we will make liberal use. Thefirm of George B. Roe & Co. is one of the oldest inFlusiiing. It owns extensive properties, both on thewater line and in the town.
