Description: Flown cover carried on the DLZ127 "Graf Zeppelin" on the "Interrupted Flight" (1 Amerikafahrt 1929) and autographed by the airship's commander, Dr. Hugo Eckener. Mails carried on the flight received a one-line cachet in German reading "Beförderung verzögert wegen Abbruchs der 1. Amerikafahrt." ("Delivery delayed due to cancellation of the 1st America trip") and were held at Friedrichshafen until August 1, 1929, when the airship made another attempt to cross the Atlantic for Lakehurst, arriving on August 4, 1929. The cover is addressed to William A. Steiger who spent 32 years at the Springfield, ILL, Post Office (1918-50) in a variety of roles including chief assistant to Postmaster William H. Conkling in charge of Air Mail services in the 1920s and 1930s to Postmaster when he retired. Source: The Cooper Collection of Zeppelin Postal History Photograph by uploader.
