Description: A barge passes under the two raised vertical-lift spans of the Interstate Bridge, across the Columbia River. The bridge carries the Interstate 5 freeway and connects Portland, Oregon with Vancouver, Washington. The Interstate Bridge is actually two bridges side by side: one built in 1916–17 and now used for northbound traffic only, the other a matching one built in 1957–58 and carrying southbound traffic only. This photo, taken from Hayden Island, in Oregon, shows the west side of the bridge (with southbound span closest), with Vancouver in the background. The lift spans are capable of being raised up to 136 feet (41.5 m) above the roadway, which is about 176 feet above the river at low water, but the river level was much higher than normal at the time this photo was taken.
