Description: An incomplete copper-alloy Iron Age to Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is missing half of the integral spring, the pin, most of the hook and catchplate due to old breaks. The wings are flat, rectangular in form and undecorated, missing their outer edges due to old breaks. They are separated by an integrally cast spring hook and spring, of which two coils survive intact. The bow itself is worn, oval sectioned and tapering to a pointed foot. On the back face of the foot are the remains of an integrally cast catchplate, which is D-shaped in form but missing its outer edges due to old breaks. The brooch measures 30.30mm in length, 9.03mm in width at wings, 4.30mm in width at bow, 3.10mm in thickness at bow and 2.67g in weight. This is an incomplete Roman Colchester brooch similar to examples from Hacheston (e.g. Blagg et al., 2004: no. 63). It is of 1st century AD date, c.25-60 AD.
