Description: Probably painted by a pupil of Van Dyck in a vigorous derivation of his style. The Earl of Thanet was a Royalist supporter and led a regiment fighting for the King in Sussex early in the Civil War, although in April 1645 he took an oath to Parliament. He married Lady Margaret Sackville, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Dorset in 1629 and the couple had eleven children.
