Description: A specimen of Metrosideros polymorpha, a flowering tree endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago, colonizes a more-than thirty year old pahoehoe lava flow from Kilauea at Kalapana, Hawai'i. This plant depicted may have since been destroyed—the area was partially re-covered by fresh flows in 2010.
