Description: "King's Cross London: The Great Dustheap, Next to Battle Bridge and the Smallpox Hospital", by E,H. Dixon (active 1837-1859). This is a laystall, or municipal rubbish dump, and was the usual way of disposing of town garbage before modern hygienic landfills. A business, its proprietor would employ men, women and boys to recycle the material. Most content by volume was household coal ash, which was sold for making bricks. A horse-and-cart track ascends the hill.
