Description: Kongorikishi statue from 14th century Japan. Wood. The sculpural style is flamboyantly realistic, as is typical of the period. Originally stood guard at the gate to Ebaradera, a temple in Sakai, near Osaka. Now on exhibit at the Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.
