Description: Lamp standard and ferry, Exeter Quay The lamp standard "was taken from the six that were located on the 1905 Exe bridge. They were cast by Macfarlanes of Glasgow. The lamp standards were removed from the old Exe Bridge in 1973, and these two painted in the city's official colours and installed on the quayside in 1983." http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/_organisations/organisations.php . Butt's Ferry costs 20p to cross the river. It needs to be a fairly modest charge as, for the last ten years, Cricklepit Bridge, which is about 150 metres upstream, has allowed pedestrians to cross the river without a fee. According to the same source, there has been a ferry here since at least 1641, but it required a public enquiry to retain it in 1973. The ferry is operated by pulling it along a cable across the river. The view is from above the sandstone cliff alongside the Quay, from the lawn in front of Colleton Crescent.
