Description: "Liberty Channel" - the former ship launching basin of the Western Pipe & Steel Company as it looks today. In the foreground is a council notice indicating the basin's history. The basin was first dredged by the company in 1918 and four side-launching shipbuilding ways constructed, two on each side of the channel. A total of 18 merchant vessels were launched here between 1918 and 1920 for the U.S. Shipping Board. The channel and the ways were restored and upgraded in 1941 for the Maritime Commission's Long Range Shipbuilding Program, and a total of 48 ships launched during World War II - 5 Type C2 ships and 43 Type C3's. This is the current location of Oyster Point Marina/Park, in South San Francisco, California.
