Description: Divided Loyalties: A West Point graduate and veteran of the Seminole and Mexican American Wars, Pemberton was from Pennsylvania, but married a Southerner who influenced him to fight for the South. He commanded Confederate forces defending Vicksburg, eventually surrendering city and garrison on July 4, 1863. After the war he returned to Philadelphia, city of his birth.
