Description: The Buttercross on Westgate in the smaller of Mansfield's two market areas. Behind the van is the entrance to the renovated library complex (re-opened in January 2012 after temporary closure for refurbishment). Buttercrosses (a.k.a. butter crosses) are medieval monuments occasionally seen in ancient market towns. They provided a central point in the market place where dairy products were sold, the fresh produce frequently being displayed on the circular, stepped bases of the cross.
