Description: A model of SS Great Britain's original engines, from the Victoria and Albert Museum, showing the arrangement of the inclined engine cylinders and the giant gearwheel and gear chains, the top of which actually rose above the main deck where they were housed in their own cabin. This model has a propeller placed on the gear shaft which may give a misleading impression that the engines were in the stern of the vessel, adjacent to the propeller. In reality, the engines were amidships and the propeller was in the stern, more than 130 feet away from the midship section shown here.
