Description: Detail of the monument to Christopher Colombus (1451?–1506) at the Plaza de Colón ("Columbus Square") in Madrid (Spain), built between 1881 and 1885. It's the western side of the square base, sculpted in stone in a Neo-gothic style by Arturo Mélida (1849–1902). Relief represents queen Isabella (centre) offering to pawn her jewels in aid of Columbus' (left) enterprise. At the right, a prayer kneeler with a crucifix. At the four corners of the base there are heralds below canopies.
